Reflections of Grace

WHAT REAL LOVE LOOKS LIKE

Scripture

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.8Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
Reflect
  1. 1.Love is described as "patient and kind" while also "not envious or boastful." In your most difficult relationship right now, which of these qualities is hardest for you to practice: patience, kindness, or refraining from envy and boasting?
  2. 2.Love is not self-seeking or resentful. What attitudes or reactions in your heart reveal areas where love still needs to grow?
  3. 3.Paul says, “Love never ends.” How does God’s enduring love encourage you when loving others feels difficult or exhausting?
Exposition
We talk about love constantly, don't we? We love pizza, we love sunsets, we love our favorite shows. But when it comes to actually loving difficult people, we hit a wall. The struggle is real: patience runs thin, kindness evaporates, envy creeps in, and resentment takes up residence. Paul's famous words feel less like a warm poem and more like an impossible standard. We know we fall short. That is why this passage ultimately points us beyond ourselves. It points us toward the kind of love God has shown us first. The patience, kindness, and mercy described here are perfectly seen in Jesus. He loved people who misunderstood him, failed him, and even rejected him. God’s love is not fragile or temporary. “Love never ends.” That truth matters because loving people can be exhausting. Relationships are messy. People disappoint us. Forgiveness can feel costly. Sometimes we run out of emotional energy and wonder if we can keep loving well. But the gospel reminds us that we are not trying to manufacture love entirely from ourselves. We love because we have first been loved by God. So this passage invites us to examine not just what we say about love, but how we live it. To show love in ordinary moments, through patience in frustration, gentleness in conflict, faithfulness in difficulty, and grace toward imperfect people. Love is more than words. It is the visible evidence of a heart transformed by Christ.
Prayer
Patient and kind God, your love for me is steady when I am faithless and gentle when I am harsh. Forgive me for the times I have been irritable, resentful, and proud. Thank you for bearing with me and for never giving up on me. Fill me with your Spirit so that your never-ending love flows through me to the people who are hardest to love. Make me patient. Make me kind. Make me like Jesus. Amen.
