Reflections of Grace

REMEMBER ME

Scripture

Luke 23:39-49

39One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”40But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?41And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”42And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”43And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”44It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,45while the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.46Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.47Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”48And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.49And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.
Reflect
  1. 1.One criminal mocked Jesus even while suffering beside him. Where might pain or disappointment be making your heart harder instead of humbler?
  2. 2.The other criminal honestly admits his guilt. What would it look like for you to stop defending yourself and come honestly before God?
  3. 3.The criminal simply asks Jesus to remember him. What does this teach you about the kind of faith Jesus welcomes?
Exposition
Sometimes we imagine that coming to God requires a cleaned-up life, the right words, or a long record of faithfulness. But Luke brings us to a dying man beside Jesus who had none of those things. He had no time to fix his past. No chance to prove his sincerity through years of service. No opportunity to make up for what he had done. All he had was guilt, need, and one desperate prayer. At first, the scene is painful. Jesus is mocked, suffering, and surrounded by people who misunderstand him. One criminal joins the mockery. But the other sees something different. He sees his own guilt clearly, and he sees Jesus’ innocence. Then he turns to the crucified King and says, “Remember me.” It is a small prayer, but it is full of faith. Grace does not require polished words. Mercy meets honest need. And Jesus answers with hope greater than anyone expected. The man who could not save himself was welcomed by the Savior beside him. His past did not get the final word. His sentence did not get the final word. Jesus did. This passage invites us to come honestly. Stop hiding. Stop pretending. Stop thinking you are too late or too far gone. The cross tells us that Jesus is near to sinners who cry out for mercy. The door of grace is opened by the dying King. So come to him today. Bring your guilt, your fear, your regret, and your need. You do not need to impress Jesus. You need to trust him. The Savior who remembered the thief will not forget you.
Prayer
Father, thank you for the mercy shown through Jesus on the cross. Help me come to you honestly, without hiding or pretending. Thank you that my guilt does not have to be the final word because your grace is greater. Teach me to trust Jesus as my Savior and King.
