WHEN DRY BONES LIVE AGAIN

Scripture

Ezekiel 37:1-14

1The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones.2And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry.3And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.”4Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.5Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.6And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.”7So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone.8And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them.9Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.”10So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.11Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’12Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel.13And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people.14And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.”
Reflect
  1. 1.God asks Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?” Where in your life are you facing something that feels beyond repair or beyond hope?
  2. 2.Ezekiel is told to speak God’s word over the dry bones. What truth from God do you need to speak over your fear, discouragement, or spiritual dryness?
  3. 3.Verse 14 declares, "I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live." How does the promise of the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence transform your understanding of resurrection life, not just as a future hope but as a present reality?
  4. 4.Apply: Name one dry or hopeless area in your life today and pray specifically for God to breathe new life into it by his Spirit.
Exposition
We know what it's like to feel like dry bones, don't we? Not just tired, but beyond tired. Hopeless. Scattered. Too far gone for anything to change. The people of Israel felt that way in exile. They said, "Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off." It is the language of complete despair. But God brings Ezekiel to the valley and asks a strange question: "Son of man, can these bones live?" Ezekiel does not answer with certainty. He says, "O Lord God, you know." That is the only honest answer. We cannot resurrect our own lives. But we can point to the One who can. Then God told Ezekiel to speak his word. As the word of the Lord was proclaimed, the bones came together. But structure was not enough. They still needed breath. So God sent breath, and what was dead stood up as a great army. God does not merely rearrange broken pieces; he gives life. His word restores. His Spirit revives. His promise awakens hope. This passage gives us courage when we feel beyond repair. Dryness is not too dry for God. Death is not too dead for God. What looks finished to us is still open before him. The Lord who promised to open graves and bring his people home is able to renew what feels lost. So bring your dry bones to God. Speak his truth over what feels hopeless. Ask his Spirit to breathe again. Your valley may be real, but it is not greater than the God who gives life.
Prayer
Lord God, you are the only one who knows if these dry bones can live. I bring you my valleys, every place that feels dead, scattered, and beyond hope. Breathe your Spirit into me. Speak your word over my despair. Reshape what I thought was unrecoverable. Thank you for Jesus, who entered the grave and conquered it, and for your Spirit, who now lives in me. Let me prophesy life until I see it. Amen.
